Yik Mun @ Tanjung Malim, Perak

Before I share my food experience in Teluk Intan during Chinese New Year, here's a post on Yik Mun - The Famous Tanjung Malim Pau. This was actually unplanned as dad, the human "GPS", asked me, the driver, to take the Tanjung Malim exit and take the trunk road instead of exiting at Bidor.

Yik Mun - The Famous Tanjung Malim Pau
When we were stopping at the traffic light, dad pointed at a corner shop on the right and asked "Wanna eat pau? Very famous in Tanjung Malim." Obviously the brunch we had in New Asia Laksa wasn't enough for me and my brother, so we agreed.

    Yik Mun
It was around 3 plus when we arrived and the shop was quite crowded as people were having their tea time. We ordered their famous Pau Kari Ayam (Chicken Curry Pau) and Pau Kacang (Peanut Pau). The paus were fresh and the curry filling was quite tasty! I ordered a can of Coke to share with my brother as the weather was very hot that day and my parents had their Kopi 'O' (Black Coffee).

The famous paus! Pau Kari Ayam @ RM1.70 and Pau Kacang @ RM1.40.
The bill total came up to RM11.80. The paus are not cheap judging by the size but this is a place I'll recommend to pay a visit if you're passing by Tanjung Malim.

    The Pau Kari Ayam filling.
Here's a brief intro and history of Yik Mun taken from their website (don't play play, sell pau also got website ok! :-P):

Mention Yik Mun Restaurant in Tanjung Malim and will probably tell you that it serves the best Pau, Kaya, Toast, Mee Hainan and Chicken Chop in Perak. The restaurant located at the junction of the north-south trunk road, is always crowded with customers during breakfast and tea time. Kok Jek Ming, the third generation of the Kok family who is running the 83-year old business, said his grandfather started the business in 1926 after closing his coffee shop in Hainan Island, China.

    Yik Mun specialties:

    • The paus of course!
    • Mee Hainan
    • Roti Kahwin
    • Chicken Chop
    • Chicken Curry with Toasted Bread
    • Prawn Steak
    • Roasted Short Ribs (imported from Australia)

Mum didn't want her coffee to be too sweet, so she requested to add the sugar herself, and they gave her a cup of sugar. Kopi 'O' @ RM1.40
Apart from Tanjung Malim, Yik Mun has 3 other outlets in Hartamas Shopping Center (Kuala Lumpur), Fast Food Shop in Jaya Jusco (One Utama Shopping Center, Petaling Jaya) and the R&R Ulu Bernam PLUS Highway to Kuala Lumpur.

New Asia Laksa @ Oakland Commercial Square, Seremban

It was Chinese New Year eve and everyone was getting ready for their reunion dinner. Same goes to our family and we had to travel back to grandma's place in Teluk Intan. It was around 12 plus in the afternoon, we left our house and decided to go to Oakland Commercial Square to grab a quick brunch before we start our journey. Guess what? Yes.. all the Chinese shops that we wanted to go to were either closed or in the midst of closing.. >_<!!

Mum's mee hoon soup with fish paste.

    Brother's dry thick noodles.

Brother showing off his wan tan and he got the last dumpling!
After driving a few rounds we decided to go to New Asia Laksa coz that's the only Chinese shop that's still open. So we sat down and was ready to order.. and when the waitress came to take our order she started with "sorry ah.. our laksa finish, hakka mee finish, wan tan mee finish, blah blah blah ... ". So without any other choices left, we had to settle for their mee hoon soup and dry thick noodles with dumplings and fish paste.

My dry thick noodles with a miserable vege.

... And a few miserable fish paste
As for our drinks, dad and I ordered iced Chinese tea, they ran out of coffee powder, so mum had to order Nescafe and brother had a cup of hot Milo.

    Mum's Nescafe. She said it's too sweet. I think it's OK. :-P

    Brother's hot Milo.

Me and dad's iced Chinese tea.
I can't really give a good review of this place since all the food was sold out. But I make it a point that no matter the food is bad or good, the place is nice or ugly, I'll still share them with all of you. :-) I'll be back to try the other stuff another day.

      Delifrance @ Jusco Seremban 2

This is another post of a pre-Chinese New Year meal with my family back in Seremban. Mum had a Delifrance buy 1 sandwich free 1 sandwich voucher from her friend, so she suggested to go to the Delifrance outlet in Jusco Seremban 2 for dinner and redeem the voucher as it was going to expire soon.

Tuna D'licious @ RM8.50 (this was FREE as the price is lower)

      Chicken D'light @ RM10.50
We ordered the Tuna D'licious and Chicken D'light sandwiches. Mum and dad didn't want to eat sandwich, so they ordered a baguette with garlic, butter and kaya spread. The Tuna D'licious sandwich was served in a croissant with tuna, sliced tomatoes and lettuce stuffed inside with salad as side. Same goes to the Chicken D'light sandwich.

Sharing is caring. Brother and I both shared the sandwiches.

Baguette with garlic, butter and kaya spread @ RM4.80
The only thing with the Chicken D'light sandwich was the chicken meat was grind until very fine and mix in mayonese that made it a bit wet. The baguette was a bit hard but the combination of the garlic, butter and kaya spread was awesome.

      Hot Coffee @ RM5.60

      Hot Chocolate @ RM5.40
As for drinks, mum and dad both ordered Hot Coffee, brother had a cup of Hot Chocolate and I had a wonderful glass of Iced Chocolate. The iced chocolate was very creamy and quite chocolaty. Nice!

      My Iced Chocolate! @ RM6.40
Overall the meal was OK. Not fantastic but good enough to fill our tummies! :-) The total bill, including service charge, came up to RM36.00. It'll be much higher if it's not for the free voucher. :-D

      Haji Sheriff's Cendol, Seremban

Last 2 weeks when I was back in Seremban for my Chinese New Year break, my parents brought my brother and I to this Indian shop in Seremban town which serve the best rojak and cendol according to them. I've passed by this shop numerous times but I didn't know that! What a shame! :-P

      Haji Sheriff's Cendol @ Seremban
So I stepped into Haji Sheriff's Cendol (or the corner green shop coz everything there is green in colour. The tables, the chairs, the workers' uniform, the signboard and of course, the cendol is green too :-P) for the very first time..

My cendol pulut. Everything is just nice! Not too sweet, the pulut is not too hard and the amazing thing is the cendol is not frozen even though it's "buried" under the shaved ice!
All of us ordered rojak mee and also a bowl of cendol each. For cendol you can either order the normal one (shaved ice + cendol + brown sugar syrup + coconut milk), cendol kacang (shaved ice + cendol + brown sugar syrup + coconut milk + red beans), cendol pulut (shaved ice + cendol + brown sugar syrup + coconut milk + glutinous rice) or cendol pulut kacang (shaved ice + cendol + brown sugar syrup + coconut milk + red beans + glutinous rice). I don't really like red beans, so I ordered the cendol pulut.

Mr. brother is enjoying his cendol.
As for the rojak, it's either with out without mee (noodles). Ours came with yellow noodles, bean curds, hard boiled egg, cucuk udang (shrimp crackers), indian kuih, shredded sengkuang (Chinese turnip) and cucumber drenched with the delicious rojak sauce. Yummy!

      My rojak mee
Now the price... I'm not sure how much the total was coz dad paid for the bill.. But I'm very sure that the cendol is priced between RM1.40 - RM1.80 and the rojak is around RM3.00 - RM3.50.

      Ready to sluuuuuurrrrppppp!!!

      My Hometown ... Seremban

OK.. I think I should start this post with a brief intro of myself. My name is Kenneth and I'm from Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, currently working in Petaling Jaya. :-)

      Negeri Sembilan

It's been a long time I've had a good look at the buildings and places in the Seremban old town since moving to Seremban 2 about 5 years ago. But this time I managed to take a few pictures (not much.. only 4 coz it was raining like cats and dogs after that) of the places and buildings in Seremban old town since I had to go and renew my passport and most importantly, my dad was the driver and I have both hands to myself. :-)

      Seremban
The pictures are not perfect as they were not taken with some high tech cameras. :-P Here you go...

Chin's Fashion: This is where mummy always bring me to buy my school uniforms. From primary to secondary school. Very loyal customers.. :-P

The tree opposite Chin's Fashion. It's still there after so many years and it's so tall now.

Wisma Punca Emas: Used to be quite happening before they built Terminal One and Seremban Parade. A popular place for school kids to "lepak" when they "ponteng" school because of the video games center inside. Me.. Used to be one of them :-P But I don't think school kids nowadays come here anymore. There's a swimming pool at the roof top but not sure if it's still there. Ah ... Those were the days :-)

Hap Kee: A popular shop in town when Chinese New Year is around the corner. It's been around for many years. Usually people will come here to buy their "lap ap" and "lap cheung".
It does bring back a lot of memories ... :-)

      Oldtown Kopitiam @ Jaya One

Harro everybody! First of all I would like to wish everyone a happy Chinese New Year! Gong Xi Fa Cai! For the next few posts I'm gonna share some of the goodies I've tried during my Chinese New Year trips to Teluk Intan and Melaka and not forgetting my hometown Seremban. But now it's Oldtown white coffee time!

      OldTown Kopitiam

Recently me and Boo Boo visited the OldTown Kopitiam outlet in Jaya One for lunch. We've been here a few times but this is the first time I thought to blog about this place. OldTown Kopitiam, originated from the city of Ipoh in Perak, famous for its white coffee, is the largest kopitiam restaurant chain in Malaysia. It has more than 170 outlets in Malaysia and Singapore.

      My Lunch 4: OldTown Prawn Meehoon-Mee @ RM8.90

During this recent visit, I ordered their My Lunch Set (12pm - 2.30pm), Set 4, OldTown Prawn Meehoon-Mee + Classic Float (your choice of 7 Up, 7 Up Revive, Pepsi or Mirinda Strawberry). I feel that the prawn mee served here is nicer compared to the other outlets I've tried before. The soup has enough prawn taste and it's tasty but not spicy enough. Served with 2 fresh medium size prawns, halved hard boiled egg, sliced fish cakes, kangkung (water spinach) and sprinkled with some fried onions. Yummy!

      Fresh medium size prawn

Boo Boo ordered their ala carte Meehoon Siam with Fried Chicken. This Thai style fried meehoon came with sambal (spicy sauce), fried chicken, sliced fried egg and sliced cucumbers. The sambal was awesome but the meehoon was a bit sourish and the fried chicken wasn't freshly fried. It was a bit cold and hard. Poor Boo Boo was having a hard time eating that fried chicken. The meehoon tasted a bit like tom yam but Boo Boo said it wasn't tom yam. Hmm.. then what's that taste?

Meehoon Siam and Fried Chicken ala carte @ RM6.90

We also ordered the Single Kaya and Butter Toast. Single brown toast spread with kaya and butter. Mmm~~ nice! But I think the 3 Layer Toast in Hainan Tea is better.

Kaya and Butter Toast (Single) @ RM1.60

And finally... we shared the Pepsi Float that came with my lunch set. A perfect drink on a hot hot day!

Pepsi Float that came together with my lunch set

The bill total (including service charge and government tax) was RM19.30. Less than RM10 per person. Reasonable!

Rating: 4.0 / 5.0 (Would have given 4.5 if not for that cold and hard fried chicken)

Picadilly @ Millennium Square, Section 14

When you mention about Picadilly, the first thing that comes to my mind would be their beer tower. They have the cheapest beer tower in town at only RM50++ for a Carlsberg tower and RM55++ for a Guinness Stout tower. Isn't that cheap?! Well.. I'm not gonna blog about the beer tower this time as I haven't taken any pictures of it yet. So.. more food.. :-D

Picadilly - Affordable Local to global Cuisine

And not forgetting the amount of LCD TVs mounted on the wall. A perfect place to watch live football games as well! Actually there are 2 different restaurants here. One is called Picadilly, and the other one is called Bangkok Masala, both with the same owner. They have an extensive menu and I bet you will have a hard time deciding what to order when you open up the menu. They serve local, Thai, Chinese, North Indian, Japanese and Western cuisines. The prices of the food and drinks here are very reasonable too.

Tom Yam Seafood Noodles - Your choice of noodles in hot and spicy Tom Yam soup with prawn, squid and fish (fish cake) @ RM5.90

The most recent visit to Picadilly, Boo Boo ordered their Tom Yam Seafood Noodles. Boo Boo said that the one she had this time was not as good as the previous one and I agree with that. The soup wasn't that spicy this time.

Sizzling Beef Yee Mee - Yee Mee on a hotplate with sliced mushroom, cauliflower, cabbage and beef @ RM6.90

As for myself, I ordered their Sizzling Beef Yee Mee. Overall it was OK but I've had better sizzling yee mee and I would suggest that they put in more Chinese mushrooms. It just doesn't taste so right without them when you eat sizzling yee mee. And oh.. talking about sizzling, I noticed that a lot of people actually order their sizzling western food. I guess they must be good. Gotta try one day.

Picadilly - Look at the number of TVs inside the restaurant

As for drinks, 99% of the time me and Boo Boo will share 1 drink. This time we ordered honey lemon (cold). This is the best honey lemon I ever had. If you feel sleepy and you need something to keep you awake, order this, take a sip and I guarantee you will be awake. This is super SOUR!

      Honey Lemon cold @ RM3.00

Our bill this time came up to RM17.40. Not a great meal but still it's satisfying.
